Rotork has been working with BAE Systems to upgrade a collection of A-range actuators to IQ3 actuators which function penstocks controlling movement of ships between the ocean and transitional locks and dry docks at Her Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth (HMNB Portsmouth).
A sequence of A-range actuators had reached the end of their operational life after long service in a difficult surroundings. BAE Systems wanted to retain all the benefits of electrical actuators, so IQ3 actuators were chosen. These needed to be specially tailored by Rotork to overcome problems around confined areas and tough access.
IQ3 actuators and IS gearboxes had been mechanically adapted in order that each actuator and gearbox might be operated by hand without getting into the confined area. digital pressure gauge designed special hand auto levers and thru drive mechanisms for the actuator and gearbox to remove the necessity for confined space entry.
Actuators inside the IQ vary are watertight, offering ingress safety to IP66/68 at 20 m for 10 days. They have a complicated twin stacked display with configurable data logger performance, and an absolute position sensor provides reliability and accuracy.
