Rotork assists BAE Systems in naval base actuator upgrades

Rotork has been working with BAE Systems to improve a sequence of A-range actuators to IQ3 actuators which function penstocks controlling movement of ships between the ocean and transitional locks and dry docks at Her Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth (HMNB Portsmouth).
diaphragm seal of A-range actuators had reached the end of their operational life after lengthy service in a challenging setting. BAE Systems needed to retain all the benefits of electric actuators, so IQ3 actuators had been chosen. These had to be specifically tailored by Rotork to beat problems around confined areas and tough access.
IQ3 actuators and IS gearboxes had been mechanically tailored so that both actuator and gearbox might be manually operated with out coming into the confined space. Rotork designed special hand auto levers and through drive mechanisms for the actuator and gearbox to eliminate the necessity for confined area entry.
Actuators within the IQ vary are watertight, offering ingress safety to IP66/68 at 20 m for 10 days. They have a complicated dual stacked show with configurable information logger functionality, and an absolute place sensor supplies reliability and accuracy.
